Remove Gas & Oil Stains From an Asphalt Driveway

Gas spills on driveways generally occur when refilling a vehicle or perhaps lawnmower with gasoline. Made of crude oil, gasoline mars driveways with unsightly stains and strong odors. Although gasoline quickly evaporates, it leaves flammable chemicals in driveways. Chemicals in gasoline contaminate the atmosphere and are actually dangerous to breathe. Since gasoline spills are actually unattractive, unhealthy, and unsafe, promptly remove them from driveways. Get gas spills from a driveway before they permeate the surface a lot more and become more problematic.

Step one

Pour ordinary sand liberally over the gasoline, completely covering the spill. Leave the sand on the driveway overnight to absorb the gas spill.

Step two

Sweep the gasoline-soaked sand off the driveway and into an old container with a lid.

Step three

Pour dish soap liberally onto the remaining gasoline stain. Wet the dish soap with water from a hose.

Step four

Agitate the soapy gas stain with the push broom for a second. Let the soapy water permeate the driveway for 5 minutes.

Step five

Continue agitating the driveway with the broom until the gasoline stain disappears.

Step six

Rinse the sudsy residue off the driveway using fresh water. Blot up the sudsy runoff with paper towels to stay away from contaminating the environment.

Step seven

Dispose of the paper towels and container of gasoline-soaked sand based on local ordinances.

A gasoline spill on any pavement makes a mess, but it can ruin the surface when gasoline soaks asphalt. When it is left to sit, the gas starts to eat away at the asphalt material. To stay away from having the asphalt ruined, you have to isolate, neutralize and remove the gas spill. Simply by using a mix of effective supplies and quick action and removal techniques, you can get rid of the gasoline stain and prevent damaging effects of the gas.

Step one

Cover the fuel spill with a heavy layer of cat litter to isolate the spill. Use enough litter to absorb the gasoline, adding more cat litter if needed.

Step two

Sweep up the cat litter with a broom and dustpan.

Step three

Wet the asphalt with water from the hose. Drizzle dishwashing detergent over the surface of the gasoline-stained asphalt.

Step four

Scrub the dishwashing detergent to make a soapy lather on the asphalt. Allow the detergent solution to remain on the surface of the asphalt for thirty to sixty minutes to emulsify, causing the gasoline to be drawn out of the asphalt.

Step five

Pour cat litter over the asphalt to absorb the detergent solution and soak up the remaining gasoline. Let the cat litter and detergent solution combination dry completely.

Step six

Scrape the surface of the asphalt to remove the dried cat litter and detergent poultice. Rinse the asphalt with the hose to remove cat litter residue. Let the surface air dry.
